Technical Requirements and Safety Features

Motorised bicycles that meet the following requirements will be treated like conventional bicycles and exempted from registration with LTA:

  • The construction of a motorised bicycle must be similar to that of a conventional bicycle;
  • The motorised bicycle can only be powered by an electric source;
  • The maximum power output of the motorised bicycle must not exceed 200 watts;
  • The motor power of the motorised bicycle can only cut in when the rider starts to pedal; and
  • The motor power of the motorised bicycle must be cut off when it reaches 25km/h or when the rider stops pedalling.

Type Approval and Certification Scheme

To ensure that the motorised bicycles sold in the market meet the approved technical requirements, LTA will also introduce a type approval scheme for motorised bicycles from 1 October 2004.

Every new make and model of motorised bicycle must obtain type-approval from any of the LTA-authorised vehicle inspection centres. Each approved bicycle must also be affixed with a seal by the inspection centre before it can be sold or used on public roads in Singapore.

Rider Requirements

For safety reasons, TP will require all riders of motorised bicycles to be at least 16 years old and they must wear a bicycle helmet when riding the motorised bicycle. These new requirements will take effect from 1 January 2005.

Road Traffic Act

Please note that it would be an offence under the Road Traffic Act for any person to sell or ride motorised bicycles on public roads that do not comply with the above requirements.

    Hello,
    Might move to SG this summer. Would this JP e-bike be a problem to use/get registered in SG? Please share your comments with me. This is a fully pedal assisted e-bike w maximised speed of 24km/h. Only issue I see is that the motor is 240W and capable of transporting 2 kids. In Japan, this is approved and no licence needed for these bikes. http://global.rakuten.com/en/store/zitensyadepo/item/yamaha-05-pc26/

    Greetings,according to the poster,it says "ride on roads and not on pedestrain pavement" Does it mean i cannot use this bicycle on a pedestrain pavement and only on roads? I'm not a very good cyclist and i worry for my safety if i can only cycle on roads

    • Shun says:

      Hi J.Khua,

      According to the LTA regulations, bicycles ( all types ) cannot ride on pavement. only on Roads. However, we still see many bicycles on the pavement.
